Who this is for
An agent has sent something called a work permit for Poland, Romania, Croatia, Malta, Germany, Serbia or another country. It may be a PDF, a photo of a card, or a screenshot of a website the agent controls. You are in India. You have not travelled. Someone wants the next instalment. You searched "verify work permit" and found government portals that do not know your file. This page is the other question: is this job real, before you pay.
Government sites should rank for their own systems. We are not those sites, and we do not pretend to be. We also do not describe what a genuine permit looks like. That description is a gift to forgers.
What a work permit usually is
The name changes. Poland issues a decision to the employer. Germany usually writes the right to work into the visa and the residence title, so a separate English "Germany work permit" is already a warning. Romania's employer files on the official platform, and one major visa flow is paused. Croatia's employer applies, and the card comes after arrival. Malta's employer files a single permit with Identità. Ireland's department issues an employment permit, and the visa is a second step. The country hub is the index. Open the country you were sold.
Across those systems, three things repeat. The employer in that country is part of the application. The permission is for one country. A plastic card, where one exists, is usually not something you hold in a Kerala living room before a visa and a flight. Finland is different enough that its own guide says so. Do not let an agent use one country's rule to explain another's paper.
What you cannot do with a passport number
People ask for a "work permit check online" the way they check a train PNR. For the countries we cover, that search does not exist as a public passport lookup. Some offices let a worker follow a case they already opened, inside an account that belongs to them or to the employer. An agent who sends a link and says "type your passport here" is asking you to trust their website. Open the government's own address, typed by you, or do not open it.
Red flags
- Pay is demanded before any employer confirms the job.
- The file is only a WhatsApp photo.
- The sender uses Gmail while claiming to be a ministry or an embassy.
- There was no interview.
- The salary for unskilled work is far above local adverts.
- "Visit visa now, permit later." See visit visa jobs.
- A guaranteed permit, or a permit for the whole of Europe. No such permit exists.
- Pressure to pay today.
- The agent is not willing to show a registration on eMigrate where Indian law requires one.
- The agent hosts the "official check" on their own domain.
- The document title is "Schengen work permit".
- Your passport is in the agent's office.

Why a scanner is the wrong tool
A scanner reads an image. The fraud is often that the employer never applied, or that the country does not issue that document at all. Italy has seen investigations into official-looking requests for jobs that did not exist. A clean scan would have called those files tidy. Match the name on the file to the country
Agents reuse one PDF shape for many countries. The name on the file is a clue, not a proof. "Work permit" in Poland is a decision for the employer. In Germany that English title is a warning. In Malta the lawful object is a single permit filed by the employer with Identità. In Ireland it is an employment permit from the department, followed by a visa. In the UAE the employer applies through MOHRE, and a visit visa is a different product. If the file's title and the country's process disagree, you do not need a closer photograph. You need the employer.

Match it to the country guide. If the employer will not confirm the job, treat the file as unproven no matter how official the image looks.
Can I check a work permit online myself?
Not by passport number on a public site, in the countries this site covers. Use the government's own pages, which you open yourself, and then confirm the employer.
My agent says the embassy verified it. Is that enough?
No. Several embassies have published that they do not verify work permits for agents. The country guide quotes the ones that have.
Is it normal to pay the agent before the permit?
Official fees we cite are often paid by the employer, or are a visa fee of a known size. A multi-lakh advance is not that fee. The MEA ceiling for a registered recruiting agent is on mea.gov.in/ras. Read agent asking for money.
