Greece work permit check: how to tell if your Greek work visa or job offer is real

We found no public Greece work permit check by passport number. How the real metaklisi process works, what to check, the real fees and the warning signs.

No, we found no public website for checking a Greece work permit by passport number. The Greek employer applies for permission to hire you, and the decision is sent to the Greek consular authority in India. You then apply for a D visa yourself through the visa centre GVCW. The check is the paper trail, not a lookup.

In April 2026, Hyderabad police arrested two members of a network that posed as an overseas recruitment consultancy on Instagram and Facebook, The Hindu reported. It promised work visas, mainly for Greece and Romania, for ₹4–5 lakh per person.

This guide explains how a real Greek work visa is issued, how to check the employer, what to pay, and the warning signs.

Can you check a Greece work permit online by passport number?

No, we found no public way to check a Greece work permit or approval online by passport number. The Greek employer applies for an employment authorisation, often called the "metaklisi" route, and the decision goes to the Greek consular authority. GVCW's "Track your application" only follows a visa application you have already submitted.

  • Who applies: the Greek employer, for a hiring authorisation known as "E.4" (Greek government services portal, mitos.gov.gr)).
  • Where the decision goes: to the Greek consular authority in India (GVCW notice, 30 September 2025).
  • The one check that exists: before you apply for your D visa, the Embassy must already have received your employment papers. If it hasn't, it rejects the application (GVCW notice).
  • GVCW tracking: tracks a submitted visa application, not a permit.

How is a real Greek work visa issued?

A real Greek work visa is issued in four steps. The Greek employer applies for an employment authorisation and pays a fee, the decision is sent to the Greek consular authority in India, you apply for a national D visa through GVCW, and after entering Greece you apply for a residence permit straight away.

1. Employment authorisation ("E.4")Greek employerApplies electronically through the Ministry of Migration and Asylum, or by courier to the decentralised administration's one-stop service until e-filing is active. Pays €200 per worker. Shows income of at least €60,000 gross per worker for a company, €22,000 for an individual employer, and €22,000 in agriculture. Submits the contract and a copy of your passport. The result is an administrative decisionmitos.gov.gr)

3. D visaYouApply at GVCW. Passport valid for 1.5 years; police clearance certificate apostilled by the MEA and under three months old; insuranceGVCW: national D visa
4. Residence permitYou, in GreeceApply immediately after entryGVCW: national D visa

About GVCW: GVCW (Global Visa Center World) describes itself as the exclusive external service provider of the Greek consular authorities in India (GVCW).

About the contract: Greek rules set a minimum contract length for workers invited from abroad. Ask the employer which minimum applies to your contract, and have it checked if the agent can't explain it.

Seasonal work: this guide covers standard employment. If you were offered seasonal farm work, ask the employer which authorisation it applied for, and run the same employer and paper-trail checks.

Is the Greek employer real, and could it really hire you?

A Greek employer needs two checks: that it exists in GEMI, Greece's official business registry, and that it is big enough to hire you. Greek rules require a company to show at least €60,000 gross annual income per worker it hires from abroad, or €22,000 in agriculture. A tiny shop "hiring 20 Indians" doesn't add up.

  1. Find the company in GEMI. Search businessregistry.gr for the name, tax number (AFM), registered office and activity. Compare each one with your contract.
  2. Check the income rule. A company must show at least €60,000 gross income per worker, an individual employer €22,000, and agriculture €22,000 per worker (mitos.gov.gr)). Ask yourself whether this business could plausibly earn that for every worker the agent says it is hiring.
  3. Check that the job fits the business. The authorisation looks at the relevance of the specialisation to the job (mitos.gov.gr)). A construction worker "hired" by a travel agency is a reason to ask questions.
  4. Ask the employer yourself for the authorisation decision's reference number and date, using contact details you found yourself, not the ones on the agent's PDF.

How do you check your Greek job offer and visa papers?

Checking a Greek job offer and visa papers takes six steps before paying anything more: read the contract, check the employer in GEMI and against the income rule, ask the employer for the authorisation decision, apply at GVCW yourself, don't travel on a visa you were simply handed, and check your Indian agent. Official sources come first.

1. Read the contract

It should be full-time, state the salary and your employer's details, and be signed. The salary should be at least the statutory minimum for the job. Ask which minimum contract length applies. Then compare the contract line by line with everything else you hold:

  • Is the employer's name, tax number (AFM) and address the same as in GEMI?
  • Is your name spelled exactly as in your passport, with the right passport number?
  • Do the job title, place of work and salary match the offer letter and anything the agent told you?
  • Is the contract signed by someone who actually represents the company?

Any difference between documents is a reason to stop and ask before you pay.

2. Check the employer

Search for it in GEMI and test it against the income rule above.

3. Ask the employer for the decision

Ask for the employment authorisation decision's reference and date, and whether it was sent to the Greek Embassy in New Delhi. The Embassy must already have your papers before you apply (GVCW notice). GVCW also says no prior Embassy approval is needed before you submit, so an agent who wants money to "get the Embassy's approval first" is describing a step that doesn't exist. A genuine employer that applied for you knows your name, the job and when it filed. If it has never heard of you, stop.

4. Apply at GVCW yourself, under the right category

GVCW says applicants or their agency are responsible for choosing the visa category, and an application under the wrong category may be rejected (GVCW notice). Don't let an agent pick a category without explaining why.

5. If someone hands you a visa, don't travel on it until it's checked

In 2025, a young man from Punjab was caught at Delhi airport with a forged Greek visa arranged by an agent (Times of India). A genuine D visa comes from an application you submitted yourself.

6. Check your Indian agent

Indian recruiting agents must be registered. Look up the agent on the MEA's list of registered recruiting agents on eMigrate. If you have already paid, file a police complaint, complain to the office of the Protector General of Emigrants with the agent's details, as the MEA advises, and report online payment fraud at cybercrime.gov.in or call the national cyber crime helpline 1930 (PIB).

If the papers still look doubtful after these checks, have them examined independently. Check my Greece documents →

What should you pay for a Greek work visa, and what shouldn't you?

GVCW lists Greek employment visa fees of €180 (type A) or €75 (type B), plus €30 for attesting your signature on the work contract and a €30 service fee. The employer separately pays €200 per worker for the authorisation in Greece. Fees to an agent for a "permit" or "government quota" are a red flag.

  • Visa fees (GVCW): type A €180 (₹19,620) or type B €75 (₹8,175), plus €30 (₹3,270) for attesting your signature on the work contract, plus a €30 GVCW service fee (GVCW: national D visa). Rupee amounts change with the exchange rate. Ask GVCW which type applies to your application.
  • Authorisation fee: €200 per worker, paid by the employer in Greece (mitos.gov.gr)). If an agent asks you to pay it, ask why.
  • Red flags: a "permit fee", "embassy approval fee" or "government quota fee" paid to an agent.

What are the warning signs of a fake Greek work permit?

The clearest warning signs of a fake Greek work permit are an agent offering to check your Greek permit "by passport number", an employer you can't find in GEMI, a tiny business hiring many workers, and talk of the Embassy "approving" your file later. Routes through third countries and visas handed over at the airport are serious warning signs too.

  • ✗ "Check your Greek permit on our link by passport number." We found no such official tool.
  • ✗ An "approval" from an employer you can't find in GEMI, or a tiny business "hiring" many workers.
  • ✗ The agent says the Embassy will "approve" your file later. The Embassy must already have your papers before you apply.
  • ✗ Pressure to apply under a category the agent picked without explaining it.
  • ✗ Being sent to a "VFS Greece" appointment or a private office. GVCW says it handles Greek visa applications in India.
  • ✗ Fees for a "government quota" or an "India–Greece agreement visa".
  • ✗ Routing through third countries such as Nepal or Egypt, or a visa handed over at the airport.
  • ✗ Recruitment through Instagram or Facebook pages promising "guaranteed" Greece or Romania visas.
  • ✗ Requests that you pay the employer's €200 authorisation fee to the agent.

Which Greece job scams have hit Indian applicants?

Two recent Greece job scam cases from India show the pattern. In Hyderabad, police arrested two members of a network selling fake work visas for Greece and Romania through social media. At Delhi airport, a young man was caught with a forged Greek visa after an agent routed him through other countries. Both are reported news, not court findings.

  • Hyderabad (April 2026): police arrested two members of a network that posed as an overseas recruitment consultancy on Instagram and Facebook. It promised work visas mainly for Greece and Romania, at ₹4–5 lakh per person (The Hindu; New Indian Express).
  • Delhi IGI Airport (March 2025): a 20-year-old from Punjab was caught with a forged Greek visa at departure. He told police the agent had promised to send him to Greece via Egypt for ₹12.5 lakh, after first sending him to Nepal to build a travel history (Times of India).

The same pattern of fake offers, social-media recruitment and forged visas appears in our Romania and Bulgaria guides.

What should you check before you pay for a Greece job?

Before paying for a Greece job, confirm ten things: the employer is in GEMI, meets the income rule and fits the job, the contract is signed, the decision went to the Embassy, you apply at GVCW yourself, you pay only official fees and no "quota" fee, your agent is registered, and you keep your passport.

  • ✓ The employer appears in GEMI.
  • ✓ The employer plausibly meets the income rule for the number of workers it is hiring.
  • ✓ The job matches the employer's business.
  • ✓ The contract is signed, with the salary and length stated.
  • ✓ The employer gave me the decision's reference and date, and confirmed it was sent to the Embassy.
  • ✓ I am applying at GVCW myself, under a category I understand.
  • ✓ I'm paying only the official visa and GVCW fees.
  • ✓ Nobody has charged me a "government quota" fee.
  • ✓ My Indian agent is registered on eMigrate.
  • ✓ My passport stays with me.

What if you can't check the documents yourself?

An independent check of your Greek documents is the next step if you only have scans from the agent, the employer doesn't answer, or your family needs a written answer before the next instalment. Do it after the official checks above. It adds to GEMI, GVCW and the Embassy; it doesn't replace them.

Testiy is an independent document check for overseas job offers, work permits and visas, run by ARK Tech & Logistics in Thrissur, Kerala. Testiy is not affiliated with any embassy, VFS Global or immigration agency. An AI scan helps a human expert in Germany find signs of editing, and the expert, not the AI, gives the verdict, often after contacting the employer named in the document. The verdict comes within 24 hours, with a certificate and a public verify link, from ₹1,600 incl. GST.

The service does not access Greek ministry systems, contact the Embassy for you, or guarantee a visa. See how verification works, pricing and refund terms.

Frequently asked questions

Can I check my Greece work permit online by passport number?

No, we found no public website for checking a Greece work permit by passport number. The Greek employer applies for an employment authorisation, and the decision is sent to the Greek consular authority in India. Ask the employer for the decision's reference and date, and check the employer yourself before paying anyone.

What is metaklisi?

Metaklisi (μετάκληση) is the Greek procedure for inviting a non-EU worker from abroad. The Greek employer applies for permission to hire a named worker, pays a fee, and proves its income and the job. If approved, the worker applies for a national D visa through the Greek consular authority.

Where do Indians apply for a Greek work visa?

Indians apply for a Greek work visa through Global Visa Center World (GVCW), which describes itself as the external service provider of the Greek consular authorities in India. The Embassy must already have received your employment papers before you apply, or it will reject the application. Applicants are responsible for choosing the correct visa category.

How much does a Greek work visa cost from India?

GVCW lists Greek employment visa fees of €180 (type A) or €75 (type B), plus €30 for attesting your signature on the work contract and a €30 service fee. The employer separately pays a €200 authorisation fee per worker in Greece.

How do I check if a Greek company is real?

A Greek company can be checked in GEMI, the official Greek business registry at businessregistry.gr: search for it and compare its name, tax number and address with your contract. Greek rules require a company hiring from abroad to show at least €60,000 gross annual income per worker, or €22,000 in agriculture.

Is there an India–Greece government job scheme?

No, we found no India–Greece government job scheme that an agent could sell. India's official list of labour mobility agreements didn't include Greece when we checked on 8 October 2026. Treat any "government quota" or "agreement visa" claim with caution and ask for the official notification.

What should I do if my Greek visa might be fake?

A Greek visa that might be fake should not be used to travel, because a forged Greek visa was detected at Delhi airport in 2025. Contact the Embassy of Greece in New Delhi or get the document reviewed independently. If you have paid an agent, file a police complaint, complain to the Protector General of Emigrants, and call the national cyber crime helpline 1930.
